Taken from the album 'Keys to the World', 'Words Just Get In The Way' is another Richard Ashcroft gem that would no doubt receive endless media criticism. You could (if you were misguided) pick holes in this Verve–esque number. I hear journalists talk of 'colorless mid-tempo acoustic guitars, twangy guitar licks, dripping strings, and endless "Hey Jude" ad libs'.
I say bollocks, the only reason for over analysing Ashcroft and digging burrows in his music is because you expect a 'Drugs Don't Work' classic every time and are still hung up on the split of The Verve. Get over it!
'Words Just Get In The Way' is by no means a classic, and perhaps not that challenging for those over analytic music academia journos, who plague review columns with pretentious scientific descriptions that mean nothing to the average music listener. However, it is a marvelous piece of work that is soulfully pleasing, and provides that same retrospect melancholy feeling that comes authentically free of charge with every Ashcroft production. Undeniably good, buy it!
