Following on from the huge ‘Clubland Adventures Vol 1’ five (count ‘um!) CD set from early 2009, Defected return here with another 3 discs of highlights from their considerable musical vaults.

Only a label with such a prolific and consistent output could go about celebrating 10 years in the business by releasing 8 CDs-worth of highlights – and you know there is still more in their catalogue too.

This latest triple pack is mixed by label boss Simon Dunmore, and as a showcase of the kind of track and selection that has become globally known as Defected’s signature sound, it’s another box ticker.

There’s a simple, thumping house music formula to that Defected sound, yet after 10 years it still manages to do the dancefloor business very well indeed. Potentially this is because the vocally-led, hands-in-the-air tracks the label releases take the listener on a aural whirlwind global tour within the confines of upfront 4x4 beats.

As this collection shows, the imprint owes as much to the exotic ethnic stylings of African chants or Middle Eastern serenades as it does the Gospel tradition of US soul divas, as found on mix opener Masters At Work Pres. India, ‘To Be In Love’. There’s also a heavy nod to gay New York club culture, as indeed there should be, and Defected’s long-term romance with the French, typified by the inclusion Martin Solveig’s ‘Everybody’.

There are a few of the label’s more electronic, non-vocal forays, like the beautiful ‘Rej’ by Ame, but mostly it is peak-time Saturday night monsters like Outwork feat. Mr Gee’s ‘Elektro’ or classic sunshine Miami poolside hits like Dajae’s ‘Everyday of My Life’.

Fans of the label will probably own most of this material already in one form or another, but there are a few tasty remixes that may have passed you by in there too. And as a retrospective of one of dance music’s most important independent labels, this is proof that the decade old formula works spectacularly well.
