In a short period of time since they formed, this north London five piece 'Cajun Dance Party' already enjoyed phenomenal success and recognition. 'The Next Untouchable', the band's debut release came on the back of a handful of gigs local to the band and publicises their own version of music incorporating influences from far and wide.
Extremely well produced – and indeed orchestrated – 'The Next Untouchable' encompasses every slight, every nuance and incorporates every element to 'Cajun Dance Party's' musical make up. Erupting into proceedings is a fiery, melodic spell of electric guitar, tinged with the essence of a country/ folk ho down. Robbie Stern's guitar work throughout this whole episode is faultless and despite his age, shows talent beyond his years. A riot of snare and bass drums, two and three chord riffs and a plethora of electric keyboards, together they conspire to create a new indie classic.
Lead vocalist Daniel Blumberg is a veritable vocal talent, with lyrics conveyed in a wounded yet fighting way. Similar to something resulting in a cross between Kooks front man, Luke Pritchard , Morrissey, and comedy club singer 'Vic Reeves', Blumberg is able to evoke a careless, yet timeless sound that ingrains itself on the mind.
Buttercups, the other single on the album, is by no means a memorable track. Slower, and lacking the catchy melody and lyrics of 'The Next Untouchable', it pales in significance. The only hope is that this single is a true reflection of what CDP's potential really is, and that the group doesn't prove to be a one hit wonder. Unlikely.
