Bonde do Rolê

Bonde do Rolê is a Funk Carioca group from Curitiba, Brazil consisting of MCs Pedro D'Eyrot and Marina Ribatski, and DJ/MC Rodrigo Gorky. The name "Bonde do Rolê" roughly translated means "Joyride Trolley" in Brazilian Portuguese. The group started in their hometown Curitiba in the south of Brazil, mixing sexual riffs (ranging from Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane" to Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box", but not restricted to these) with funk carioca (sometimes known as baile funk or Brazilian funk). The trio did their first major tour in 2006, with Cansei de Ser Sexy. During the tour, Marina had an accident at the first Pitchfork Festival in Chicago, dislocating her elbow.

International producer Diplo first found out about the band through their MySpace account, and pushed them using his own fledgling label, Mad Decent, before Bonde was signed to Domino in 2006. "We just started making music out of fun—we didn't have any intentions to work professionally with music," said Rodrigo Gorky.

As the name might suggest, Bonde Do Role are not from U.K. They were formed by the chance meeting of a DJ named Gorky and fellow DJ Pedro sometime in 2005. Developing their own individual sound of electro-rock, they soon became unexpected practitioners and adapters of baile funk, a sound with its ... read more
